- I'm an avid gardener, food lover, cookbook hoarder, and environmentalist. After years of biding our time in the city, waiting for the chance to move to the country and live out our rural dream, we're finally in the process of building a "not so big house" on a gorgeous acre and a half just outside the city. We're planning to do much of the work ourselves, and are using as many "green" and or recycled materials as possible. Living on one income in order to homeschool our two children has given us a keen interest in what it takes to live frugally, and has led us to growing as much of our own food as possible, as well as making most of what we eat from scratch. We're discovering that, more often than not, living frugally and living sustainably go hand in hand.

My Mom is getting Owen a no stress chess set for Christmas. She found it at Mindware. Owen has been asking to play for quite some time.
How old were your kids when they began to learn?? Owen is six.
I guess it is never to young if there is an interest!

I think my kids both started before they were 5 (my son for sure). We have a great book called Checkmate at Chess City that uses puzzles to teach the moves of the various pieces.
I really enjoy chess, I wish I'd learned how to play as a child (my husband taught me not long after we met).

My husband bought it for me at a local craft fair many years ago. He taught me how to play chess when we first started dating, and that set was one of my first Christmas gifts from him. I love it!
